Real Talk About Building Better.

Wednesday 7 August | 6.00pm – 7.30pm | AD Library, Wānaka

Free to attend | RSVP required

When it comes to building warm, dry, efficient homes – there’s no shortage of buzzwords. But what does “performance” actually look like in practice?

This event is for anyone who wants to understand how to build better in a way that’s grounded, realistic, and relevant to our local conditions. Whether you’re mid-design, budgeting a build, or just exploring your options – this is your chance to hear directly from the people who are doing it every day.

We’ve brought together a team to share practical insights from real-life high-performance homes in Central Otago. No fluff. No jargon. Just honest conversations about what works – and why it matters.

What to expect

  • Short presentations from three expert speakers

  • Real case studies and local builds

  • Insights into thermal performance, ventilation, material choice and comfort

  • Time for questions and discussion

  • Drinks, nibbles, and relaxed conversation

  • Warm welcome and introduction from Penny at AD Library

Our Speakers

Mark Anderson – MA Building
Wanaka Builder and Passive House Expert
Mark will share lessons from a recent performance home in Northlake – including the small (but mighty) 1% details that made a big impact on comfort, cost, and energy use. Expect insights on thermal bridging, running costs, and visual proof of how well the home performs compared to its neighbour.

Catherine – Pro Clima NZ
Airtightness + Ventilation Specialist
Catherine will explore how airtightness and ventilation work together to keep a building warm while also protecting the external envelope from moisture damage – especially important in our colder climate. She’ll be introduced by Penny from AD Library.

Charlotte – ALKI Design
Architectural Designer
Charlotte will talk windows – from triple glazing to the often-overlooked importance of framing and placement. She’ll also touch on alternative build systems, performance myths (like overheating), and how orientation and daylighting design can dramatically affect both comfort and efficiency.

Why we’re doing this

We believe in building better – and in sharing what we’ve learned. This event is part of our commitment to helping people make confident, informed decisions about their homes. It’s completely free to attend, thanks to the generosity of our speakers and collaborators. We’d love to see you there.
